A lonely scene I happened upon while searching for other photo opportunities. I was drawn to the surreal clashing of lines offered by the fence and pipe openings, but found something far more meaningful in the dormant plant. Split across the unfeeling barrier, it reaches towards a barren landscape and branches upward as if to imitate the chains. The portions that have crossed the barrier, while inches distant, are indistinct as fading memories.
Why does it reach? For the toiling of insects that are nowhere to be found? For the meandering of herbivores that were driven off and birdsong heard only during migrations? The rare car in passing spoke, but gave no meaningful answer.
