A severely faded sign for free objects that I found on a mild winter day. I came across this scene by pure chance, having initially set out to photograph a nearby preserve. That outing was a fair letdown when it came to hiking and photography, and I stopped in this town on the way out to photograph an interesting building facade. The facade also fell short of what I was looking for, but was a couple blocks from this scene.
I was immediately captivated by the tree’s shadow marking so much of the shoddy wall, and was struck by the sign, worn by the elements to the point of being just another plank randomly nailed to the wall. I’m sure the original intention was one of generosity, but the many areas of neglect communicated a space where things are dumped or discarded, where a sense of giving is just a fleeting shadow.
