A serene forest floor bordered by light, shot in monochrome.

A space of serenity and contemplation amidst towering trees and waning light, found at White Pines State Park of Mt Morris, IL. I was drawn to the flow of undergrowth and seeming thresholds formed by the trees, but had no idea what the stump meant to my intention and the overall scene.

In the years since taking this photo, I’ve come to find meaning not just in the area surrounding and leading to the foreground, but the slight clearing around the stump itself. It speaks of community, bonding, and trust, of hands held and hearts open in times of joy, celebration, sorrow, and seeking. I could think of more to say, but it all seems pale and paltry compared to the image of those coming together, and those remaining joined even after they part.
